Iain’s on his bike for Challenge150

11.06.19 Categories: Staff stories,

Iain Yardley is a consultant paediatric and neonatal surgeon (specializing in thoracic and upper gastrointestinal surgery).

For his #Challenge150,  Iain and his wife Sarah cycled the Southwold-Roubaix bike race, which is a 75 mile cycle around Suffolk. Between them, they completed 150 miles to celebrate Evelina London’s special 150th birthday.

Working at Evelina London inspired Iain to test his peddling mettle and raise funds for the hospital as part of Challenge150.

‘I work here and can see the need to expand and develop the hospital to improve the care we provide for the children’.

‘We’re keen cyclists, mainly mountain biking, but we’ve never cycled this far before. The combined challenge of a long-distance ride with off-road segments in a part of the world we love was too good to pass up.’

The scenery may have been idyllic on their cycle ride, but no challenge is complete without a few obstacles, as Iain explains.

‘We didn’t really train, but we did go on a long ride the weekend before to reassure us we might be up to it.’

‘The ride itself was hard, mainly because of the weather. The pictures all look lovely with the sun shining but it was quite windy and about an hour in it snowed!. The cold was the main factor we had to overcome but finishing was a great feeling.’

Not put off by adverse weather, Iain encourages anyone thinking about taking on their own #Challenge150 to get moving.

‘Just get on and do it! And don’t be shy about asking for sponsorship, people are super generous and will back you.’

Fancy gearing up for your own #Challenge150 to help us celebrate our special birthday year. How will you get involved? Register for your own Challenge 150 today.
