Nicola and Poppy's Urban Challenge

13 September 2017

Nicola’s son Spike was born four months prematurely at what is called the limit of viability and was given a 6% chance of survival.

Spike spent the first months of his life in a high-tech intensive care capsule. He nearly died on more than one occasion but finally came home when he was three months old. Through his eight years, he has suffered numerous complex and painful medical conditions but Nicola says;

‘He has been supported throughout by Evelina London who have made a profound difference to his life.’

Poppy, Spike’s sister, and Nicola will be running 2.4 km around Guy's Hospital, spinning 15 km on a Wattbike before climbing 29 floors to the top of Europe's tallest hospital building, Guy's Tower.

Their aim is to raise £4,800 to support the gastroenterology team to buy a particular piece of specialist bedside equipment, a state-of-the-art machine that samples poo to detect bowel inflammation.
