Volunteer Profile - Lee Ward

01.06.16 Categories: Patient stories, Supporter stories

Lee Ward is one of the Evelina London Fundraising Team’s invaluable volunteers. The team couldn’t support the hospital and its patients in the same amazing way without people like Lee selflessly giving up their time.

Lee tells us more about what being a fundraising volunteer involves and why it’s so important to him to support Evelina London.

What kinds of volunteer roles have you done at Evelina London?

I’ve done a variety of volunteering roles both at the hospital and elsewhere, such as supporting and cheering at events like the London Marathon and RideLondon, and fundraising at The Oval. Most of my roles have been collecting money and raising awareness of the cause and the activities that we do.

What made you decide to become a volunteer?

I’m a patient at Guy’s Hospital and I wanted to give something back to the Trust.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering?

I enjoy talking to the public about the role of fundraising and how it helps the hospital.

Which part of volunteering is most challenging?

Probably when I am having a quiet period whilst fundraising and there are not many passers-by to interact with.

What is your favourite thing about Evelina London?

Definitely the setting, and how it does not feel like a hospital for the children.

What’s your proudest achievement as a volunteer to date?

I don't really have a proudest moment, as I always feel proud knowing that in my own small way I am helping to give something back to the hospital which has given me so much.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering for Evelina London?

I would let them know that they will be helping out a great team in advancing several worthy aims of a great NHS Trust, and that their help will really make a difference. I have already found this out during my short time volunteering for this cause.

What do you like to do outside of volunteering?

I enjoy watching cricket and socialising with my friends.

If you could only take one thing to a desert island, what would it be?

The Internet! I can get everything else I need via being online (or is that cheating…?!)
