Surrey County Cricket Club raise £57,000 for Evelina London and renew partnership for a second year
Evelina London is delighted to continue its partnership with Surrey County Cricket Club and the Kia Oval for a second year. Last year, the partnership raised an incredible £57,000 in support of the hospital as well as helping to spread awareness of their work and services in the community.
A year of fundraising
As well as hosting a 5k race and family fun day at the Kia Oval in September, the Cricket Club held a special fundraising match inviting parents and staff to watch. They also encouraged players and volunteers to drum up support by doing bucket collections at matches.
‘The partnership with the Kia Oval has been fantastic, both for raising awareness of the hospital and bringing joy to patients and staff,’ says Dr Grenville Fox, joint clinical director of Evelina London.
‘The themed match last year was great fun for us all; we even brought along a boy who had undergone a kidney transplant ten days before, who was absolutely desperate to come and be a part of the match!’
Assistant Head Coach, Stuart Barnes showed his support by completing Nightrider, a 100km bike ride at night through London’s streets. And even the club’s mascot Caesar the Lion joined in the fundraising efforts, running in the 2014 Virgin Money London Marathon. (A special thanks to Operations Manager David Gorrod for donning the suit!)
Making a difference
To see the difference their generous support would make, players and coaching staff visited Evelina London last February to meet patients, families, doctors and nurses. They chatted to children and families on Savannah Ward and were particularly moved by their visit to the children’s intensive care unit.
‘It was a very humbling experience to see those little babies be looked after so wonderfully well by an incredibly gifted and brilliant bunch of people,’ says cricketer Gareth Batty. ‘It was a real eye opener.’
The money raised has already funded some of the latest and most advanced equipment for the hospital and is providing vital support to families in financial need. Donations to Evelina London mean we can buy essential equipment like blood pressure monitors and incubators, and fund pioneering projects like the trial of a new home monitoring programme for children with serious heart conditions.
‘To raise over £50,000 in the first year of our partnership was a great achievement,’ says Richard Thompson, Chairman of Surrey County Cricket Club.
‘Everyone at the club looks forward to working together in 2015 to continue this.’
We’re so grateful for their support and look forward to our continuing partnership. Look out for another themed match later this year, Katherine Smith from the Kia Oval events team running in the London Marathon and a brand new fundraising initiative from the players in the Surrey CCC Academy – amongst many other events currently being planned. You can also donate to Evelina London while buying T20 Blast match tickets.
